New York Red Bulls star forward Lewis Morgan is dealing with an undisclosed injury that withheld him from international duty with the Scottish national team. His status for the Eastern Conference semifinal against NYCFC on Nov. 23 is uncertain.
A spokesperson for the club told amNewYork that the Red Bulls are “hopeful” that he will be able to play in the Hudson River Derby.
Morgan has not trained in any capacity since New York’s upset Game 2 victory over the Columbus Crew at Red Bull Arena, which punched its ticket to the conference semifinals for the first time in six years.
The 28-year-old recently won MLS Comeback Player of the Year after potting 13 goals with seven assists in 2024. He was limited to just five games the year before after suffering a severe hip injury that required surgery.
With Morgan back in the fold, the Red Bulls were a far more imposing unit thanks to a newly built partnership with Emil Forsberg. They held a top-four spot in the East for the majority of the season before a late-season swoon dropped them to seventh, largely because Forsberg was dealing with a lower-leg issue. Morgan was also missing in action for a few stretches, most notably when he was called up to Scotland for Euro 2024 in June — his first call-up to the national side in five years.
If he is unable to go, the Red Bulls’ chances at a second-straight upset dwindle considerably. The Red Bulls were beaten twice by NYCFC this season by a combined score of 7-2, and not having their top scorer available would not bode well.
