New York Red Bulls head coach Sandro Schwarz suggested that star forward Lewis Morgan could return to action in early May.
The Scottish playmaker sustained a knee injury that required surgery four weeks ago. He was initially designated a six-week minimum timetable for a potential return.
“There’s been great progress [in his recovery],” Schwarz said on Thursday. “He’s very professional in his individual program every day with the whole medical team. I would say when we are talking about the timetable, is that he could be back in the next two, three weeks — the beginning of May. I’m pretty sure he’ll be back on the field then.”
Morgan appeared in just one match this season before sustaining the injury — he was a late scratch prior to the team’s home opener on March 1. His loss was one of the more significant subtractions in a campaign that has already featured an endless onslaught of injuries.
The reigning MLS Comeback Player of the Year, Morgan recorded 13 goals with seven assists in his first season back from a hip injury that required surgery and limited his 2023 season to just five matches.
His stellar play earned him a spot on the Scottish national team for the 2024 European Championships — his first time back with the Tartan Army in five years.
After helping lead the Red Bulls to an Eastern Conference title, he signed a two-year extension with the club over the winter, which also includes two additional option years for the 2027 and 2028 seasons.
