The New York Red Bulls have signed star playmaker Lewis Morgan to a two-year contract extension, a source told amNewYork on Monday, which also includes two additional option years for the 2027 and 2028 seasons.

The 28-year-old had one guaranteed season left on his previous contract with a team option for 2026 and was coming off one of his finest seasons as a pro. After overcoming hip surgery, the Scottish international potted 13 goals with seven assists to earn MLS Comeback Payer of the Year honors in 2024.

Morgan had received interest from multiple European clubs over the last eight months, including links with English Football League Championship side Stoke City shortly after he competed with the Scottish national team at Euro 2024, though an official offer never came.

A former Celtic and Rangers product, his torrid first half of the season caught the eye of Scotland’s coach, Steve Clarke, who called him into the side for the first time since 2019 after injuries decimated his roster. Morgan appeared in pre-tournament friendlies with the Tartan Army before getting time in its group finale against Hungary. He became just the third player in Red Bulls history to compete at a European Championship while with the club.

While his career renaissance might have opened up an opportunity for a full-time return to Europe to play his club soccer, a source told amNewYork shortly after the Red Bulls lost the MLS Cup Final that Morgan wanted to stay in New York.

He will continue to feature prominently for a side that fell just short of its first-ever MLS title just two months ago. The versatile playmaker has shown himself capable of playing away from his natural position as a winger, providing invaluable support up front as a forward for a Red Bulls team whose attack is in flux.

While the team signed former PSG and Bayern Munich veteran Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, the depth of natural strikers behind him is thin in the form of 20-year-old Wiktor Bogacz, 19-year-old Serge Ngoma, and 22-year-old Roald Mitchell, who is coming off knee surgery last year.
