With a nod to the New York City aesthetic, its history, and the subway system, the Mets unveiled their new City Connect uniforms on Friday that will be featured throughout the 2024 season and will debut on-field on April 27.
Designed by Nike with help from Mets stars Francisco Lindor and Brandon Nimmo, the uniform features grey jerseys and black pinstripes with “NYC” emblazoned across the chest in black and a Gotham-inspired font that can be found on the team’s road uniforms.
The pinstripes consist of circles and diamonds, which make up the logos of each line of the city’s subway system. On the shoulder features a patch made to look like a subway token, featuring the Mets’ ‘NY” logo in purple.
The purple accents throughout the uniform are a nod to the 7-line subway, which has carried millions of Mets fans to the ballpark in Queens. While that is the main inspiration, it is also a coincidence that the New York Baseball Giants featured purple in their uniforms throughout the 1910s as they paid homage to the nearby New York University (NYU).
On the bottom corner of the jersey above the uniform tags is “The World’s City,” which pays homage to the diversity of Queens.
The hats are also grey with the interlocking “NY” in black with a white outline. Running along the bottom of the front of the cap is the Queensboro Bridge.
On the inside is a subway-map-inspired series of neon lines with “New York City’ written in the same font as the Mets’ iconic road uniforms in the late 1980s.
“Our new City Connect uniforms are an homage to everything that makes NYC the greatest city in the world. We wanted to honor different parts of the city that connect to our home in Queens,” Mets chief marketing officer Andy Goldberg said. “From the bridges to the trains to the streets, Mets fans across New York and beyond can wear this streetwear style look with pride.”
