Jose Quintana, whose potential reunion with the New York Mets could have bolstered their depth heading into the 2025 season, is signing with the Milwaukee Brewers, according to multiple reports Monday.
The 36-year-old southpaw had spent each of the last two seasons with the Mets, going 13-16 with a 3.70 ERA and a 1.268 WHIP in 246 innings pitched. Last season, he overcame a difficult start that saw him sit with a 5.29 ERA on June 9 ( through 13 starts) by going 9-5 with a 2.77 ERA in his final 18 outings from June 15 to Sept. 28.
In the postseason, he allowed just one unearned run on six hits in 11 innings across his first two postseason outings against the very same Brewers in the Wild Card and Philadelphia Phillies in the NLDS before getting slammed for five runs in 3.1 innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 4 of the NLCS.
Speculation grew in recent weeks, suggesting that the Mets should explore the option of reeling Quintana back from the free-agency waters for at least one year. In the first three weeks of spring training, their rotation has already lost Frankie Montas (lat) until late May or early June, while Sean Manaea (right oblique) will start the season on the injured list.
Shortly after Manaea was shelved last week, the Mets brought on veteran right-hander Jose Urena, who will serve as both a multi-inning reliever and a spot starter if necessary. He was added to a mix of Tylor Megill, Paul Blackburn, and Griffin Canning as options to round out the rotation behind Kodai Senga, David Peterson, and Clay Holmes.
Blackburn was tagged for four runs on three hits with two walks and zero strikeouts in 1.1 innings pitched on Sunday against the Boston Red Sox. He has allowed four earned runs in his first two exhibition outings, good for a 15.43 ERA.
