New York Mets shortstop Jose Iglesias’ song, “OMG” has become a celebratory rallying cry after home runs, providing joyous moments in the dugout. He even got to perform it on the field after a game. Jerome McCroy, aka “Jaymaccustoms”, has helped add another layer to the team’s OMG excitement with a sign he designed.
The Mets have been posing with the vibrant OMG sign for the past few weeks, most notably after home runs.
McCroy is from Ridgewood, Queens, and has always been artistic, but started focusing on creating art for a living over 10 years ago. He has done sneaker and canvas painting, pencil and ink sketches, and wood cutouts.
“I wanted to make something to celebrate Jose Iglesias’ song ‘OMG’, which has been the Mets’ unofficial victory song and also plays when they hit home runs,” McCroy told amNewYork. “I made it based on the shirts Iglesias’ printed for his release that he gave to his teammates, and most notably, [Mets co-owner] Alex Cohen.”
The Mets had a robust 16-8 record in June, the best in the National League. A season that once looked dismally lost gained an abundance of excitement and hope as the team turned it around.
“As a lifelong Mets fan, it’s incredible to be connected on this level,” McCroy said. “Every home run means that my sign is going to be hoisted. The team seems galvanized right now.”
There have been other teams who have incorporated fun paraphernalia into their dugouts. Some examples include a rally monkey in Anaheim, a thumbs down for the Yankees, and a trident in Seattle.
“I think that whatever feels good is what the team should go with,” McCroy said. “It can build chemistry. Winning definitely is first and foremost, but all 26 guys and the organization having each other’s backs is the number one focus.”
Fans oftentimes create signs, posters, and more in an attempt to inspire a team. Seldom does it make its way into a team’s dugout and impact the clubhouse as much as the OMG sign has in New York.
“I was not expecting this type of reception at all. My entire focus was to share this piece as a way to share my thanks for getting things back on track.,” McCroy said. “Super grateful for Alex Cohen and her hospitality towards all fans, including helping me get the sign to the team.”
The Mets will look to continue their profound winning while McCroy looks forward to seeing his OMG sign hoisted high and proudly.
