It appears as though the New York Mets have avoided a worst-case scenario of sorts regarding slugger Pete Alonso’s right hand after being hit by a pitch during Wednesday’s 10-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The CT scan on the 29-year-old’s hand came back negative, as first reported by SNY’s Andy Martino on Thursday, and is considered day-to-day.
Alonso was removed from Wednesday’s game in the first inning when he was hit by a James Paxton 93-mph fastball while trying to check his swing. The team did not provide an initial update other than to confirm that he would undergo imaging, though manager Carlos Mendoza said x-rays were “normal.”
The first baseman had appeared in each of the Mets’ first 55 games this season but had struggled for long stretches of it, slashing .231/.308/.453 (.761 OPS) with 12 home runs and 26 RBI. Headlining an inconsistent offense, the Mets are already off to a disastrous start having sunk to 11 games under .500.
Without him for a prolonged stretch, it would have been that much more difficult for the team to claw its way out of the doldrums. Instead, his absence will be minimal.
