The legendary Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the 2024 US Open, which is set to begin later this month in Queens.
“Hi all, writing today to let you guys know that I have decided not to compete at this year’s US Open a place where I have amazing memories,” Nadal wrote in a statement on X. “I will miss those electric and special night sessions in NYC at Ashe, but I don’t think I would be able to give my 100% this time. Thanks to all my US Fans in particular, will miss you all and will see you another time. Best of luck to all for the always amazing US Open! My next event will be the Laver Cup in Berlin.”
The 38-year-old Spaniard is coming off a packed schedule which included a run to the final at the Swedish Open on July 21 before heading to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris just days later where he was a part of the opening ceremonies as a torch bearer.
He competed in both the singles and doubles competitions, losing to Novak Djokovic in the second round of the singles competition on July 29 before falling alongside Carlos Alcaraz just two days later in the quarterfinal portion of the doubles tournament to Americans Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram.
Nadal is in the twilight of one of the greatest careers in the history of the sport. He ranks second all-time amongst men’s players with 22 major championships, which include four US Open titles in 2010, 2013, 2017, and 2019.
“Rafa is a tremendous champion and he will be missed during the 2024 US Open by the fans and all those associated with the tournament,” Stacey Allaster, tournament director, said. “We wish him all the best and look forward to having him back at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.”
In his spot, American Mackenzie McDonald has moved into the main draw of the competition.
