Sauce Gardner is one of the best rookie selections the New York Jets have made in franchise history. The fourth overall selection had the most passes defensed amongst all corners and was the first rookie corner to be named a first-team All-Pro since Ronnie Lott in 1981.
Swagger and domination were central themes throughout Gardner’s first year in New York. Even with his name being talked about as a finalist for Rookie of the Year, and among the top names at the cornerback position, the Cincinnati product is just focused on what he can control.
“I really just focus on myself. I don’t watch what other people have going on. I try to perfect my craft every day. That’s for the media to decide, just try to do my job at the highest level.” Gardner told the Good Morning Football team Tuesday morning.
In that same interview, Gardner spoke quickly and efficiently on the Jets quarterback rumors: specifically in regards to a potential trade deal with the Green Bay Packers for 4x NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers.
“I can’t speak on it too, too much. But I know a little something about something…” Gardner said with a smile.
Rodgers future with the Packers has been in doubt over the last few seasons. The former Super Bowl MVP and future first-ballot Hall-of-Famer was seen as likely to be moved this offseason according to Adam Schefter in January.
New York has been a team linked to Rodgers thanks to the hiring of offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett. While he didn’t call plays in Green Bay, Hackett’s relationship with Rodgers is well-documented. The Jets currently have the second-best odds to trade for the All-Pro quarterback by most sportsbooks with the Las Vegas Raiders seen as the favorite.
The Jets have been steadfast in their goal to get a veteran quarterback to start in 2023 with Rodgers being the apple to general manager Joe Douglas’ eye.
And according to the Jets top defensive player in Sauce Gardner, there’s something going on behind the scenes currently.
