Mike Kafka appears to be in some demand this offseason.
The Seattle Seahawks have requested an interview for their vacant head-coaching role with the Giants’ offensive coordinator as they search for Pete Carroll’s successor following the team’s announcement last week that he would not return to the NFC West side after 14 seasons and a Super Bowl title.
Kafka, 36, just completed his second season as Giants offensive coordinator where he headed a unit that struggled mightily in 2023. New York’s offense ranked 30th in points scored and 29th in total yards accrued with most of those issues being contributed to an inept passing game.
An offensive line that regressed by remarkable margins from last year’s playoff run allowed the second-most sacks in a single season in NFL history. It played a key role in quarterback Daniel Jones’ struggles before suffering a neck injury in Week 5 and a season-ending ACL injury in Week 9.
Kafka predominantly worked with Tommy DeVito and Tyrod Taylor under center the rest of the way while the Giants finished 6-11.
Regardless of his team’s down year, this is the second team that requested an interview with the offensive coordinator. He has already interviewed for the Tennessee Titans’ head-coaching gig after they parted ways with Mike Vrabel.
The Seahawks have also requested permission to interview Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, and Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Frank Smith.
Prior to his stint with the Giants, Kafka built his resume working with the high-powered Kansas City Chiefs for five seasons from 2017-2021 — first as an offensive quality control coach before taking over as quarterbacks and passing-game coordinator where he helped fine-tune Patrick Mahomes’ game.
He was a part of the coaching staff when the Chiefs won Super Bowl LIV over the San Francisco 49ers.
