It was always going to be unlikely, but Tommy DeVito’s hopes of making the New York Giants’ roster for the 2024 season already seems doubtful.
A report from Fox Sports’ Ralph Vacchiano further threw cold water on an NFL reunion between Big Blue and DeVito.
“It is a good thing ‘Tommy Cutlets’ took full advantage of his 15 minutes of fame, because he doesn’t seem to be a big part of the Giants’ future plans,” Vacchiano wrote. “He’ll stick around all summer and might even get offered a place on the practice squad during the season.”
Giants general manager Joe Schoen appears ready to ride with Daniel Jones at least one more time in 2024, though he has a team option in his contract for the end of the season that could be exercised if he plays anything like the five games he appeared in last year. Jones threw just two touchdowns and six interceptions before suffering a season-ending torn ACL.
In his absence — and following Tyrod Taylor’s rib injury — DeVito was thrust into the starter’s role where he went 3-3, completing 64% of his passes for 1,101 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions. His quick rise to fame fizzled out by Christmas Day when he was benched at halftime in Philadelphia against the Eagles.
With Jones’ status for Week 1 of 2024 still up in the air, the Giants brought in veteran backup Drew Lock as a No. 2 option following Taylor’s departure across MetLife Stadium to the Jets.
For the upcoming season, that appears to be the bona fide 1-2 punch and if Schoen opts to draft a quarterback to start developing for 2025 and beyond, he would take the No. 3 spot. Simply put, there is no place for DeVito if that happens.
