New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito suffered a forearm injury during Sunday’s blowout 30-7 loss against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, making his status questionable for Thanksgiving in Dallas against the Cowboys.
Devito was listed as limited for Tuesday’s walkthrough, and head coach Brian Daboll admitted that he is “not 100%” for the quick turnaround on Thursday.
The 26-year-old passer took over for Daniel Jones, who was benched and subsequently released last week after going 2-8 as the Giants’ starter this season. The move to DeVito did little to spark New York’s offense, as it was outgained 450-245 on Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium.
DeVito completed 21 of 31 passes for 189 yards but was sacked four times — a continuation of the most glaring issue that plagued him last season.
The final unimportant stretch of another lost season of the Giants is vital for DeVito to show the team that he could be either a primary backup or a bridge starter next year. He is an exclusive rights free agent this offseason, meaning the Giants have the opportunity to sign him to a one-year deal. If they choose not to, he becomes an unrestricted free agent.
It is one of the perceived reasons why Daboll opted to elevate DeVito from third-string to starter after moving on from Jones despite career backup Drew Lock inhabiting the No. 2 role all season.
Lock spent three years with the Denver Broncos and last season with the Seattle Seahawks, appearing in 28 career games with 23 starts. He has made just three brief appearances with the Giants this year, including one snap and a short completion during the fourth quarter after DeVito was hit hard by Tampa Bay defensive tackle Calijah Kancey and momentarily forced to the sidelines.
Should DeVito not be able to go, Lock will get the start with Tim Boyle, signed last week, serving as the backup against a Cowboys team that upset the Washington Commanders in Week 12. At 4-7, they are two games ahead of last-place New York in the NFC East.
