On a day where it was in the low 60s, the wind was howling, and it was consistently raining in the Bronx, the only thing more dreary than the weather was the output of the Yankees offense as they lost 7-1 to the Arizona Diamondbacks and were officially eliminated from postseason contention.
Aside from Estevan Florial’s dazzling triple in the fifth inning and an Aaron Judge ground-rule double in the eighth, the Yankees recorded four hits the rest of the game. The lone run came with two outs in the bottom of the ninth as Judge drew a walk with the bases loaded.
While the offense was bleak most of the afternoon, the Yankees mustered a couple of threats late in the game. In the eighth inning, Anthony Volpe came to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs after Tim Wells worked a full-count walk. The rookie struck out in a perfect encapsulation of the Yankees’ day. In the ninth, the Bronx Bombers were threatening again after Judge worked a walk to push across the lone Yankees run of the afternoon. With the bases still loaded, Gleyber Torres flew out to first to end the game.
Diamondback’s ace Zac Gallen set the tone for Arizona, going six innings while striking out eight and only surrendering three hits. Ryan Thompson and Kevin Ginkel each threw an inning in relief to maintain the shutout before Luis Frias let up the lone run in the ninth.
Arizona jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first behind two sac flies from Tommy Pham and Christian Walker. The Yankees were able to keep the game close until the seventh when Evan Longoria broke the game open with a two-run single.
Carlos Rodon grinded through 6.1 innings, allowing five runs, with only three of them earned. Rodon now holds a 3-7 record with a 5.74 ERA. Randy Vasquez carried the majority of the relief for the Yankees, going 2.1 innings, and surrendering two earned runs.
