L train straphangers will have a chance to sound off against the MTA next month over plans to potentially shutter the line between Williamsburg and Manhattan for Superstorm Sandy repairs.
The May 5 town hall at the Marcy Avenue Armory at 355 Marcy Ave. will be the first of two meetings MTA officials plan to have with the public on the repairs inside the Canarsie Tunnel.
The agency is mulling a plan to shut down L train service between the boroughs for as long as 18 months so that crews can fix Sandy-related damage, but MTA President Veronique Hakim promised that the agency is working to meet riders’ needs.
“We are committed to working hand in hand with the community to inform our decision on construction alternatives,” she said in a statement.
Tunnel construction is set to begin in 2019 at the earliest and the MTA is considering other options including a three-year plan where one side of the tunnel is repaired at a time.
The Williamsburg meeting will begin at 6 p.m. and it will be attended by several elected officials, including Assemblyman Joseph Lentol and councilman Stephen Levin. The MTA is also planning a meeting about the L train plans in Manhattan later in May.
