Thanksgiving weekend travel: MTA, NJ Transit, Amtrak service changes

Whether you’re making an early getaway or coming into the city for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday, there are several service changes you’ll want to know about.

Here’s a look at how the MTA, NJ Transit and Amtrak are operating before, during and after the holiday:

Subways

Wednesday: Normal weekday service

Thursday: Trains will operate on a Sunday schedule. There will be additional service on the 42nd Street S Shuttle and early morning service on the No. 1 train to accommodate Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade spectators. The closest subway stations to the start of parade route are 72nd, 79th, 81st streets and 59th Street-Columbus Circle.

Some exits and entrances at 59th Street-Columbus Circle, stations along the Sixth Avenue B, D, F and M line and Penn Station will be closed. The 72nd Street station will be open, but trains may bypass the station if the is crowding before the parade, the MTA said.

Friday: Normal weekday service

Buses

Free rides will be offered on the Q70 Select Bus Service LaGuardia Link through Sunday, Nov. 25, the MTA said.

Wednesday: Normal weekday service

Thursday: Buses will operate on a Sunday schedule. The MTA warns riders in Manhattan that there may be delays, especially on the routes near the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Friday: Service will operate on a weekday schedule with some exceptions. Check mta.info for your specific route.

LIRR

Off‐peak prices will be in effect Thursday through Sunday.

Wednesday: 12 extra trains will leave Penn Station between 2 and 4:10 p.m. on the Babylon, Far Rockaway, Montauk, Port Jefferson, Port Washington and Ronkonkoma branches. Check mta.info/lirr for the full schedule. 

Thursday: A weekend/holiday schedule will be in place.

There will be six extra trains on the Babylon, Montauk, Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma branches to get customers into the city for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

There will also be 11 extra trains to get people home after the parade.

Friday: Trains will operate on a regular weekday schedule.

Saturday and Sunday: There will be extra service on the Babylon, Long Beach and Port Jefferson branches, the first of six consecutive weekends that the LIRR will bolster service to meet the holiday season demand. Check mta.info/lirr for the full schedule.

Metro-North

Off‐peak prices will be in effect Thursday through Sunday.

Wednesday: There will be 18 early getaway trains departing from Grand Central Terminal between 1:30 and 4:15 p.m. on the Hudson, Harlem and New Haven lines. Check mta.info/mnr for the full schedule.

Thursday: There will be extra trains for riders going to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, as well as additional trains after the parade. There will be expanded service to the city in the evening for customers returning from Thanksgiving dinners upstate. Check mta.info/mnr for the full schedule.

Friday: Trains will operate on a Saturday schedule with additional service to New York City in the morning and service out of the city in the afternoon to accommodate workers and Black Friday shoppers. Check mta.info/mnr for the full schedule.

Saturday and Sunday: There will be extra trains and additional cars on existing trains. Check mta.info/mnr for the full schedule.

NJ Transit

Wednesday: Trains will operate on a weekday schedule with additional service from Penn Station, starting at 1 p.m on the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast, Raritan Valley, Morris and Essex, Pascack Valley and Port Jervis lines. Check njtransit.com for the full schedule.

Thursday: Trains will operate on a weekend/major holiday schedule. There will be extra trains on the NEC, NJCL, RVL, M&E and Port Jervis lines for people going to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Check njtransit.com for the full schedule.

Friday: Trains will operate on a modified weekday schedule with additional New York-bound trains between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on the NEC and NJCL lines. Select trains will not operate or be combined with other trains. Check njtransit.com for the full schedule.

Saturday and Sunday: Trains will operate on a regular weekend schedule.

Amtrak

The Amtrak Acela Express and the Northeast Regional will have “extended schedules with additional frequencies and capacity during Thanksgiving week,” the company said. Schedules for each line can be found at amtrak.com.
