You know a good pizza shop when you walk in and smell hot, fresh pizza.
That’s what you get at Philomena’s Pizza in Sunnyside. Since 2018, Philomena’s has been serving up classic round pies and square pies that were inspired by the pies that Philomena’s Pizza owner, Dave Acocella, would make with his mother growing up.
In a bustling and diverse neighborhood like Sunnyside, Acocella says that in addition to keeping up the family traditions, he’d like to serve pies that appeal to the whole community.
In honor of National Pizza Day on Feb. 9, Kenny Bollwerk had a conversation with Acocella to talk about the history of Philomena’s and what makes it a staple in the neighborhood.
