The people have spoken: Pizza is your ultimate New York City icon!
We asked and the people answered in a multi-week tournament to crown the ultimate icon. Across both amNewYork and What Is New York’s Instagram accounts, tens of thousands of people voted to determine the winner of this competition. In the end, the cheesy goodness that is the New York slice of pizza prevailed, taking home the crown!
Pizza had a long battle ahead of it, easily taking out Black and White Cookies and Bagels in the early rounds of competition. After taking on (and taking out) the Bacon Egg and Cheese, Pizza took down the Times Square Ball Drop, leaving the classic New Year’s Eve tradition in the dust to go up against the top seed on the other side of the bracket: Rats.
The Pizza vs. Rats matchup was truly one for the books, showing some of the closest voting matchups in the competition. Voters on amNewYork leaned in favor of Rats (63% compared to 37% of pizza), and on the What Is New York account, the race was closer, with Pizza gaining 51% of the votes compared to 49% for Rats.
Despite perseverance on the Rat’s side, the votes were tallied to the last possible second, and Pizza came out on top, winning by less than 300 votes altogether.
